Why You Need Eye Exams as You Age

You may have gone your entire life without needing to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. But by the time you’ve celebrated your 40th birthday, it’s quite possible that you have already begun noticing changes in the quality of your vision.

Is it harder to read things like books, the screen of your smartphone or a restaurant menu? Baby boomers aged 40 and older often become nearsighted. Nearsightedness, also referred to as presbyopia, occurs as a natural part of growing older.

Get Your Vision Checked When You’ve Had Your 40th Birthday

There is no need for you to put up with poor eyesight caused by the normal aging process. Your preferred eye doctor in the greater Southern New Hampshire area at MVC Eye Care will be happy to consult with you about your age-related vision problems.

The lenses inside your eyeballs tend to grow less flexible as a normal part of aging. This makes it more difficult to focus on objects that are up close (like text on your tablet computer or a receipt). In mild cases of age-related nearsightedness, your eye doctor may be able to recommend standard reading glasses that you can purchase at your local pharmacy.

When eyesight changes are more pronounced, you may get a new prescription for glasses or contact lenses. Bifocal lenses are suitable when you already need to wear glasses to see distant objects, such as a movie or traffic signs on the road.

If you prefer to avoid contact lenses and eyeglasses, you can consult with your eye doctor about getting LASIK surgery to correct your poor vision.
